Interested folks should contact TV-Free America (www.tvfa.org). They have various resources available, including an excellent list of recommended reading. Their primary concern, however, is not content by quantity of viewing and all the things (civic, religious, physical, artistic, etc) that it displaces. After reading books by Neil Postman (Amusing Ourselves to Death), Marie Winn (The Plug-in Drug), Jane Healy (Endangered Minds), and others, I am convinced that becoming a "sophisticated viewer" is not enough. Most people (especially young children) need to drastically reduce the amount of time before the tube, some may need to seriously consider turning it off completely. I recommend trying to join with TV-Free America's TV Turnoff Week in April. It is a good opportunity to see what has been replaced by TV our lives, and to find new things we could do instead (and also see how addicted we might be).
