About Mennonites | Who are the Mennonites?
| Respond to this post |

I am reding a lot of dissatisfied folk complaining about the Mennonites. They should tremble in fear, as we are the only one true church, and we will be the only people to be saved in the end. (specifically, the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Inc.) All those with doubts, fears, or waverings will be cast into the lake of fire forever if they do not join our church. We have the only truth, and none can come to the Father but by us and our Lord. We have left the United States many years ago because of the extreme immorality of the culture. Unless God performs a miracle, even the Mennonite church of America will continue its slide into lukewarmness and eventual apostasy. Join us or lose your soul forever! The time is short!

I was raised a mennonite, and was kept carefully away from the World. When my congregation turned against me (as so often they will against anyone who does not fit the mold exactly), I was cast adrift in a sea of iniquity with no way to tell right from wrong, if I had only the Mennonite ritual to direct me. Since I believed in the Spirit of the Lord, I was able to distinguish between good and evil, as it was shown to me.Sometimes this coincided with Mennonite teaching, and sometimes it did not.
Mostly, the Mennonite churches of my experience have been tolerant of only those who fit their cookie-cutter molds of dress, social standing, wealth, and overall Mennonite appearance. This is a pity, actually, since the Mennonites have something to offer to the community at large. By infighting and internal strife, it has become much diminished.

About Mennonites | Who are the Mennonites?: Religious Beliefs and Culture
| Respond to this post |

It seems to me that Mennonites could be differentiated by their religious beliefs and aspects that could be defined as cultural (I'm thinking of food, family background, etc.). This means that Mennonites have some similarities to the Jewish identity that is defined by those who are adhere to Jewish religious tradition, and those who do not: non-practicing Jews. The problem with defining the cultural aspects of Mennonites, especially when we are confronted with the number of Mennonites without last names like Yoder, Thiessen or Hildebrandt, is that we must consider non-European Mennonite traditions.
I think potlucks should be a universal pillar in the Mennonite culture.
