Dear Ed
The points you raise are very valid and are not reflective of the Anabaptist approach. Anabaptists do believe in making people aware of the Gospel message but believe that it is not they that converts a person but God. Groups that believe that they have the power and authority to win souls will be pushy in a used car salesman manner. For the Anabaptist knowing that it is God who does the choosing according to His will, do not feel the pressure to close the sale and claim a new convert. Thus any encounters with Anabaptist should be pleasant with a mutual sharing of knowledge on God being the norm and not a Bible bashing event.
As to your other concern, Anabaptist take the Bible very literally, so the verse 'I am the way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father except through Me' would exclude all people who do not accept Jesus as the risen Christ. Although Muslims accept Jesus as a prophet, they do not accept the crucifixion or the divine nature of Jesus. The Gospels clearly indicate a Jesus beyond and above the level of other prophets and indicate a level reserved solely for God, such as the ability to forgive sins, raise the dead, heal the infirm, command nature and a host of other events that all the previous prophets combined do not collectively achieve.
Jesus also did not stop or correct His followers from referring to Him as God or worshiping Him as God.

What the other Christians are telling you is correct from a biblical point of view that your current religion is not of God and chances are that you will go to hell. The difference is the approach. Non-Anabaptists Christians will come across as hostile, aggressive and cold. Anabaptist should come across as caring and concerned with a touch of sadness that God has not called you to His side.
Nothing is sadder for Anabaptist than to converse with people who have a desire for God but are on the wrong path through ignorance or lies from false teachers. All we can do is show them the true path through the love of Christ reflected in us and pray that God should find them worthy to bear the yoke of the Lamb. Sadly only a few will find the narrow gate and the narrow path that leads to salvation.
God Bless Ed
May God help you
Daryl.

Greetings,

Even though we probably won't agree on every issue, I would like to take the time to commend Mennonites for attempting to understand Muslims in their communities. This is something that many Christian groups are often not willing to do. Living here in the South and being in the military has often brought me into contact with Christians who are very aggressive in what they believe. I have been told by Christians that "your religion is wrong" or "you need to find Jesus!". I cannot even begin to describe how offensive this is. Often times, the Christian method of "sharing faith" is rather pushy and in-your-face. These times when Christians have tried to ram religion down my throat have made me a bit resentful and distrustful. Unfortunately, many of my experiences with devout Christians have been negative ones. Given the fact that I have not really ever met any Mennonites, I was curious about how you share faith. Do you actively prostletyze like other Christian denominations? How do Mennonites contrast with some of the other Christian groups?

Beyond the News: Mennonites and Muslims | mennonite view on Jesus?
| Respond to this post |

Greetings,

I was brought up as a Lutheran, but Christian theology never made that much sense to me. When I was in college and free to choose for myself, I became Muslim. The reasons for choosing Islam as my faith were partially theological, and partially personal. First of all, I must state that Muslims hold Jesus in the highest esteem. He is considered to be one of the most important prophets after Muhammad(peace be upon him). However, we do not believe that Prophet Jesus is a god, nor do we believe that he is the son of God. We believe that he was a man with much to teach us, but he was merely a man nonetheless. I decided to post because I want to get an idea of how Mennonites view those who do not believe in the divinity of Jesus in comparison to other Christian denominations. To phrase my question in a more direct manner, do Mennonites believe that those who reject the Trinity are destined for Hell? Unfortunately, this often seems to be the viewpoint of other Christian denominations that I have encountered.

Thanks for reading,
Ed

Living in an all-girls dorm, most of my new college friends are Muslim.

Obviously, I don't embrace their religion... but, of all the Abrahamic religions, I have found Muslims to be most true to their religion and respectable.

I once had feelings for a young man... Unfortunately, he was a deeply religious Muslim. To the point where he didn't look women in the eye (so as not to lead himself into temptation), and he rolled up his pants to expose his ankles (as Mohammed apparently did). He also exhibited an extreme amount of politeness and modesty of heart. Among other things.

My point: I had a profound amount of respect for his character and how committed he was to his religion. I hate to say it, but it made me see how shameful Christians have become. Many supposed Christians have no problem talking about giving up drinking and [premarital] sex for lent, or by spewing blasphemy touting it as a light-hearted joke (such as Kathy Griffin at the Emmy's).

To be honest, I wish most Christians treated their religion with as much respect as the Muslim man I had feelings for treated HIS religion.

I wish I could be a revolutionary haha.

Has anyone one read the article at Camera.org, 'The Mennonite Mission'? I would appreciate other people's feed back about this article.
Thanks
