Here at Third Way Café, we believe that media matters! What you watch on TV or at the movies, listen to on the radio or Internet, video games you play, advertising you are bombarded with, and news you access - all affects you and your family. In this Media Matters section we offer fresh weekly reviews and background articles on the media. We also encourage you to browse to other sections of Third Way Café where media issues are addressed, and welcome your feedback.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Power to Heal a Nation?

Several weeks ago, most Media Matters reviewers published a list of their top ten films of 2011. Were I to resubmit that list today, after seeing Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, I would choose it as the best film of the year. Indeed, the Academy of Motion Pictures has included it on their list of nine nominees for Best Picture.

When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences nominated The Artist this week for Best Picture as well as nine other awards, it was the first time a silent film had earned an Oscar nomination in 83 years—dating all the way back to 1929, when the first Oscar ceremony anointed Wings as its Best Picture winner.

Many of them deserve a review on this blog, yet I have chosen to tell you about a much less well-known film which I feel is particularly important and worthy of your time. I refer to Forks Over Knives, a documentary released in 2011 which catalogs our present health crisis.
