Beyond the News

What issues get your blood boiling? Do you wish you could sound off to the whole world? Here's a place to look at the issues you care about with input shaped around Anabaptist-Christian perspectives.  Beyond the News is all about issues in the news, dialogue, opinions, interviews and more. Add your own 5 cents in our Table Talk section or find resources for further exploration in the links.

Mennonites and Muslims

There is often misunderstanding between Christians and Muslims—to the point of hatred, threats and killing. Mennonites believe that we need to try and understand each other in order to live side by side in the 21st century and relate to those of other faiths.

Aging

Articles, resources and links to help re-imagine the way we deal with aging: money, housing, health, adjustment, volunteering, family conflict, and more.

Immigration

Shatter stereotypes and raise awareness of issues regarding immigrants. Explore border issues, economics, labor/work issues, political asylum, resettlement, and moving from fear to dreams. Various immigrants share moving stories, and immigrantion workers add their insights.

Racism

Issues of race may seem like old news, and yet they remain just as much a problem as ever. New wrinkles on old themes keep people apart and foster mistrust. We interviewed people who have seen first hand the effects prejudice and racism can have on a community. Their personal stories will give you an up-close view of their experiences of fear and discouragement, inspiration and hope.

Facing Death

Death has been for some a taboo topic; here you' ll encounter a man who made his own casket, a young family dealing with the mother's bout with cancer; a family caring for a dying parent in their home. You' ll also hear from people working in hospice, palliative care, chaplaincy and funeral homes.

TV Violence

Examine TV's role in society as media experts Dr. Quentin Schultze, Dr. George Gerbner, and Ramona Pence explain how and by whom our attitudes on race, sex, roles, politics, and current events are being shaped.

Capital Punishment

A variety of people look at capital punishment: Sister Helen Prejean, whose life was portrayed in the academy award-winning movie, Dead Man Walking; Bryan Stevenson, an attorney who works on capital murder cases; Howard Zehr, a writer, photographer and consultant on criminal justice issues; plus family members of victims.
